Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Some books make you view your life in a different light. Fahrenheit 451 is one of those books for me. It was written in 1950's and is a futuristic view of today's society. It is a quick read. After reading it, I wanted to throw out our TVs, MP3 players and DSs. I know that there has to be a balance between technology and society but it seems to me we are constantly being bombarded with images and useless information that have no value to one except to entertain and set your mind on less important things. There is much more to this book then the different forms of media but that is the one thing that I felt my family needed to work on.
So for our Fall Break, I told the kids no TV or DS or MP3s on the 5 hour drive up to Page. We could talk, read, write, color, play games, or just look out the windows at the scenery around us. There was great resistance to this but we did it. I will NOT say there was peace in the land but they ALL survived. :)
Another thing about this book is that society tried to make everything "Pretty". They did not want to be sad or hurt. So they would get rid of anything that would make anyone unhappy. As much as I would like the easy "no worry" life. I believe that is not way I am here on the earth. As I have said before "Life is Messy". There are ups and Downs. But to appreciate the ups, I believe one has to experience the Downs. And this is coming from a woman that suffers from Depression.
If you have a book out there that has helped you view your life differently. I would love to know what it is.
